Understanding UX

The first step to understanding how the right UX design impacts business is defining what constitutes UX.

“In simple terms, UX is that internal feeling and experience someone has when they interact with a particular product or service,” Matt said. “Remember the last time you used a product that may have been confusing or left you frustrated? It may have been a piece of software you couldn’t figure out how to use or a website that was hard to read? That’s an example of a bad user experience.

“On the other hand, if you ever had a time when you were using a particular product and thought ‘this is awesome!’ or used a piece of software to solve a problem and said to yourself ‘well that was easy’ – those are examples of a good user experience.”

How the Right UX Impacts Business

So, what happens when your customer has a positive user experience? They are more likely to do business with you again. And if they feel frustrated by your processes or interface? Not so much.

“Most buying experiences are based on how customers feel and how they believe they are being treated,” Matt said. “Ninety-nine percent of the time, an experience with a product, service or even an employee (customer service and user experience are often closely connected) will lead a customer to make a connection to how they feel about the company – either consciously or subconsciously.

“If any experience with a company is hard to use, frustrates a customer and/or doesn’t solve their problem easily, then the customer is likely to think ‘this company doesn’t value me, so I don’t see any value in them.’”
